What it is
Atoven is a 15 W GaAlAs diode laser at 1470 nm, supplied for endovenous laser ablation of superficial venous reflux. At this wavelength the laser light is absorbed by water in the hydrated endothelial and sub-endothelial cells of the vein wall; the heat that follows contracts and collapses the wall, occluding the vessel. Continuous wave, CW-repeat and pulsed delivery are selected from the console. Prescription device, for trained operators only.
System components — Console 335 (W) × 450 (D) × 290 (H) mm, 27 kg, 120 VAC 50–60 Hz, 650 W. Foot switch, external interlock switch, power key switch, protective goggles, 3 m power cord and fibre pull-back driver.
Indications
- Delivery of laser light to soft tissue during general surgery procedures
- Treatment of reflux in the saphenous veins of the thigh associated with varicose veins and varicosities, in non-contact mode
- Prescription use by trained operators only
Key features
Water absorption at 1470 nm
The absorption coefficient of 1470 nm in water is higher than that of 1320 nm, so the energy is taken up by the hydrated cells of the vein wall itself rather than by haemoglobin in the lumen.
Three delivery modes
Continuous wave, CW-repeat and pulsed, chosen from the menu button. Pulse interval 10–100 ms, pulse duration 10–200 ms, fluence range 10–998 J/cm².
Class 4 safety chain
An external interlock blocks output when the cover is open, a key switch isolates power, an emergency shut-off stops all emission, and stand-by/ready gating means the laser only fires from READY. Protective goggles are supplied with the system.
Fibre pull-back driver
A roller driver pulls the optical fibre at a controlled rate through the treated segment, with laser output held on the foot switch so both hands stay on the procedure.
Runs on cleared fibre optics
Compatible with side-firing and bare fibre optics that carry their own FDA clearances. Clearance numbers for the system and the fibres are provided on request.
The underlying principle
Laser energy at 1470 nm is absorbed by water in the hydrated endothelial and sub-endothelial cells of the vein wall. The resulting heat contracts and collapses the wall, producing vessel occlusion and halting varicosity formation.
Clearance & regulatory position
Bio-Med USA distributes FDA-cleared medical, aesthetic, surgical and dental devices. Clearance numbers, indications-for-use statements and the current regulatory position for Atoven in your market are provided on request.
